German-based Sonnex Energie GmbH will establish a 500MW Solar PV module manufacturing hub in Bangladesh.

This announcement came from a formal launching of Sonnex Energie (Bangladesh) Ltd, which emerged as a strategic joint venture between Sonnex Energie GmbH and Solar EPC Development Ltd at a function in a city hotel on Tuesday.

Sonnex Energie is renowned for its high-efficiency solar modules and PV inverters and Solar EPC Development Ltd is a market player in turnkey solar solutions in Bangladesh.

The officials of the company said that the ceremonial launch signified far more than a corporate alliance—it represents a shared vision to lead South Asia’s transition toward a green and self-reliant energy future.

This venture’s operational roadmap includes the establishment of a 500 MW Solar panel manufacturing plant, reducing dependence on imports while ensuring competitive pricing and superior quality, they said.

They noted that plans are underway to develop automated assembly plants, advanced testing laboratories, and solar-specific technical training centers—ensuring meaningful technology transfer and a skilled workforce to support a rapidly evolving green economy.

The venture would establish local logistics hubs and warehousing infrastructure to strengthen supply chain resilience. It would offer larger scaling of after-sales and O&M networks enabling long-term system performance and client satisfaction.

In the 1st phase of our joint venture we will focus on comprehensive market development for Sonnex Energie in Bangladesh, ensuring deployment for the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector as well as utility-scale solar projects.

In the 2nd Phase it aims to establish a manufacturing capacity of 500 MW annually by 2028, scaling up to gigawatt (GW)-level production by 2035.

The event was chaired by Eric, Managing Director of Sonnex EnergieGmbH and addressed by Ni Xiaopeng Liam, Managing Director of Huawei; Mr. ean Lee, Director of Yunnan Commercial Representative of China; Mr. Troy, Director of Power China Bangladesh; Mr. Bernard Shao, Regional Director of Sungrow; Monowar Islam, Advisor of AKH Group, Secretary of Power Division (Former) and Chairman of BERC (Former) Sadia Raisha Khan, Advisor and Country Representative of GIZ.

Alauddin, Rector of Bangladesh Power Management Institute (BPMI); Dipal Borua, Ex-President BSREA; Neyamul Hasan, Managing Director of Intertek Bangladesh and Ezaz Al Qudrat A Mazid, Director of Solar EPC Development Ltd, were present on the occasion.

Recognising Germany as the growing academic destination for Bangladeshi students, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam on Thursday suggested that expedited visa processing would further facilitate academic exchanges.

Additionally, he underscored the importance of broadening legal migration channels for skilled Bangladeshi professionals under the framework of the Bangladesh-EU Talent Partnership, reports UNB.

The foreign secretary made the remarks when German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Tröster paid a farewell call on him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as his diplomatic assignment draws to a close.

He congratulated the ambassador on a successful tenure and lauded his efforts to enhance Bangladesh-Germany relations. He expressed confidence that the momentum built during Ambassador Tröster’s tenure would be sustained by his successor.

FS Siam underscored Germany’s role as Bangladesh’s largest European trading partner and recognised its enduring development assistance across critical areas such as rural development, healthcare, education, energy efficiency and private sector growth, according to the MoFA.

The meeting recalled key milestones of the ambassador’s tenure, including the inaugural Strategic Dialogue held in Berlin in August 2021, progress made through the Climate and Development Partnership and the expansion of trade and cultural cooperation.

The foreign secretary expressed heartfelt appreciation for Germany’s sustained humanitarian support to the forcibly displaced Rohingya population, reaffirming that their early repatriation to Myanmar remains the only durable solution to the crisis.

Siam commended Germany’s global leadership in forward-looking initiatives such as the Global Shield and the Climate Club, expressing optimism that Bangladesh would soon benefit from the associated financial mechanisms to enhance its climate resilience.
