[🇾🇪] Houthis and US launch new attacks amid Red Sea shipping threat

Houthi rebels have claimed another attack on a United States naval vessel, calling it “retaliation” for US strikes on Yemen.

A Houthi spokesperson said on Monday that fighters had launched 18 missiles and a drone at the “aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and its accompanying warships”. The US military said it had continued targeting the group overnight.

It was the second strike on the US navy claimed by the Iran-aligned group over the last 24 hours, amid a sudden surge in hostilities. After the Houthis said last week they would resume targeting Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea due to Israel’s ongoing blockade of Gaza, the US launched a series of large-scale attacks on Yemen over the weekend, killing dozens of people and wounding many more.

China’s Rocket Force arsenal is regarded as the crown jewel of the People’s Liberation Army. In recent years, the secretive Chinese military unit has test-launched more ballistic missiles than the rest of the world combined. All American bases in the Asia-Pacific, including Guam, are within range of precision missiles from the Chinese mainland. WSJ looks at how China’s Rocket Force is preparing for a possible invasion of Taiwan and deterring the U.S. from intervening.

[🇮🇳] No surprise Pakistan sounded for ceasefire’: Air war historian Tom Cooper says conflict 'clear-cut victory' for India

No surprise Pakistan sounded for ceasefire’: Air war historian Tom Cooper says conflict 'clear-cut victory' for India

The remarks come two days after India and Pakistan announced halting of military action from both sides, following the Indian DGMO being approached his Pakistani counterpart amid the intensifying conflict between the two nuclear-powered countries.

Austrian military historian and combat aviation analyst Tom Cooper has termed India’s recent aerial offensive against Pakistan a “clear-cut victory,” stating that the lack of a Pakistani retaliatory capability and the targeting of strategic military sites—including nuclear weapons storage facilities—decisively tilted the outcome in India’s favour.

Cooper, considered one of the most respected experts on air warfare globally, commented: “When one side is bombing nuclear weapons storage facilities of the other, and the other has no ability to retaliate left, then that's a clear-cut victory in my books. No surprise Islamabad 'sounded' for a ceasefire.”

The remarks come two days after India and Pakistan announced halting of military action from both sides, following the Indian DGMO being approached his Pakistani counterpart amid the intensifying conflict between the two nuclear-powered countries.

While Pakistani has been claiming the ceasefire as its victory, US President Donald Trump has been quick to credit for the same. However, Cooper’s assessment presents a contrasting picture of the military engagement that preceded the truce.

While Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has hailed the ceasefire as a diplomatic and military success, attributing it to national unity and armed forces’ valour, Cooper’s remarks provide an alternative view, suggesting that the ceasefire was prompted by a military disadvantage rather than strategic parity.

Tom Cooper has authored several authoritative books and analyses on aerial warfare in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. His opinions are widely followed by military observers and policymakers.

In the context of South Asia’s complex military dynamics, Cooper’s analysis may influence global perception of the recent conflict, particularly as India positions itself as a capable and measured military power in the region.

The Indian Armed Forces, in their press briefings, have shown several visual evidences of its strikes causing massive damage to the terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK, and then to several air bases of Pakistan in retaliatory actions.
Female engineer among Chinese nationals killed in Besham attack: report
Vehicle transporting foreign engineers not up-armoured and lacked protection, says report submitted to govt

Ahtesham Khan
April 07, 2024

A female engineer was among the five Chinese nationals killed in the Besham attack, revealed the second report submitted by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) police to the federal government on Sunday.

A vehicle-borne suicide bomber targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers in the remote Besham area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on March 26. The Chinese engineers were en route from Islamabad to their camp in Dasu – the district headquarters of the Upper Kohistan district of K-P.

Their vehicle was hit by an explosive-laden vehicle, coming from the opposite direction, near Lahore Nala on the Karakoram Highway. The attack had forced Power China and the China Gezhouba Company to suspend work on two dam projects.

Preliminary findings from the report state that the vehicle transporting the foreign engineers was not up-armoured and lacked protection against bullets or explosions.

The report added that aerial photography of the incident site has been completed and the bus targeted by the suicide bomber was at a distance of around 15 feet from the second bus and the explosion threw it off the road into the 300-foot-deep ravine.

The Besham police station is situated approximately six kilometres from the site of the attack, while Dasu Dam is about 77 kilometres away, according to the report.

The report also stated that CCTV cameras were installed inside all vehicles in the Chinese convoy and the moment of the attack was captured through one such CCTV camera. The K-P police have recovered pieces of the vehicle utilized by the suicide bomber.

Yesterday, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had ordered action against five officials over their "negligence" in light of an inquiry report on the suicide attack on March 26.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed a thorough joint investigation into the Besham terrorist attack. A joint investigation team was formed to probe the attack.

Later, the premier decided that he would review the meetings conducted regarding the security situation in the country in general and the security of the Chinese nationals working on different projects across the country in particular every month.

Hundreds of Chinese people are employed at the Dasu and Diamer Bhasha dam construction sites. Operations by Power China have resumed at Diamer Bhasha. However, the China Gezhouba Group Company's operations at Dasu remain suspended.

The US Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative and the Office of Defence Cooperation at the US Embassy in Dhaka have handed over airfield support equipment, including telescopic forklifts and an aircraft tow tractor to Bangladesh Air Force's 212 Maintenance Unit.

The US embassy in Dhaka shared this information on its Facebook page yesterday.

It said Bangladesh Air Force contributes airlift capabilities to multiple UN peacekeeping missions across the globe, providing tactical airlift and airfield services.

In recent years, Bangladesh Air Force has also supported disaster response efforts in other friendly countries through its strategic and tactical airlift capabilities, often using its C-130 fleet.

US and Bangladesh Air Force cooperation on airlift also includes the conduct of Exercise Cope South where C-130 aircraft from both nations practice important skills including formation flying, airdrops, maintenance, and airfield operations, the statement said.

"Continued cooperation between the Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative, Pacific Air Forces, and the Bangladesh Air Force enhances peacekeeping, disaster response, and airlift readiness. This US-Bangladesh collaboration underlines our mutual dedication to promoting global peace and ensuring rapid disaster response, contributing to a safer world for all."
