Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairTarique Rahman urged the party leaders and activists to actively contribute to nation-building by carrying out their responsibilities from their respective positions.

‘Let us all, from whatever position we are in, try to rebuild our country,’ he said in a brief address at the BNP’s Naya Paltan central office in the capital, where thousands of party leaders and activists gathered to welcome him.

This was Tarique’s first visit to the Naya Paltan BNP central office since his return to the country 17 years after exile in the United Kingdom.

He also said that if anyone saw a scrap of paper on a street one should remove it (to keep the street clean), stressing that through such small acts, people could come together to build the country step by step.

He also requested the supporters to leave the Naya Paltan road to help ease vehicular movement in the area,

During his address, he urged those present there to offer supplication for the recovery of his ailing mother BNP chair Khaleda Zia.

Amid tight security at and around the Naya Paltan office for his visit, Tarique arrived at the party office at 4:06pm and delivered a short speech from the second floor of the office building.

However, due to the huge crowd, security personnel had to struggle to bring Tarique’s vehicle close to the office. Thousands of party leaders and activists greeted him with loud applause, while Tarique waved back in acknowledgement.

Senior party leaders, including senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, along with officials and staff of the central office, formally received Tarique at the main entrance to the central office.

After entering the office building, Tarique went up to the second-floor balcony and waved to the supporters gathered there. He went to the party office after more than 17 years.

Addressing them, Tarique said, ‘There is no programme here today. If we keep the road blocked, general people will face inconveniences. Since there is no event here now, we should leave the place as quickly as possible.’

Later, Tarique went to his designated chamber on the second floor. This room has been freshly built next to the BNP chair’s room at the party office.

After returning to Dhaka on December 25 following one and a half decades of exile in the United Kingdom, Tarique has been passing busy days.

On the first day, after attending a reception and delivering a speech, he visited his mother Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital.

Later that night, Tarique and his family went to House No 196 at Gulshan 2 where he would live. After the assassination of his father, president Ziaur Rahman, the house was allotted to his mother by the then government.

A few months ago, the ownership documents of the house were handed over to BNP chair Khaleda Zia by public works ministry adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Rajuk chair Riazul Islam Rizu.

Beside the House No 196 on Gulshan Avenue stands another residence named ‘Firoza,’ where his mother Khaleda Zia lives.

A day after his return, Tarique on Friday paid homage at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and later paid tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.

On Saturday morning, he visited the grave of Inquilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman bin Hadi. After offering prayers there, he also paid tribute at the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

He then went to the Election Training Institute building at Agargaon, where he completed voter registration.

After that, he visited the Banani Graveyard to pay respects at the grave of his younger brother Arafat Rahman Koko. He also visited the graves of his father-in-law, former Navy chief Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, at the Banani Military Graveyard, and the graves of army officers who were killed in the Pilkhana massacre.

Earlier on Sunday, Tarique visited the BNP chair’s Gulshan office for the first time and stayed there for nearly nine hours.

For violating party decisions and conducting organisational activities independently, BNP has expelled nine leaders, including Rumin Farhana, co-secretary for international affairs of the BNP’s National Executive Committee; Saiful Alam (Nirab), former convener of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP; and Hasan Mamun, member of the Central Executive Committee.

This information was announced in a press release signed by BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday.

The release stated that these leaders have been expelled from all levels of the party, including their primary membership.

The other expelled leaders are Muhammad Gias Uddin, Mohammad Shah Alam, and Abdul Khalek, members of BNP’s National Executive Committee; Tarun De, former vice president of the Central Chhatra Dal and secretary general of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Welfare Front; Mamunur Rashid, vice president of Sylhet District BNP; and Mehedi Hasan, president of Bancharampur Upazila BNP in Brahmanbaria District.

Rumeen Farhana, Saiful Alam, and Hasan Mamun have all filed as independent candidates in the 13th national parliamentary election. In Rumeen Farhana’s constituency, Brahmanbaria-2, BNP has announced Maulana Junaid Al Habib, central vice president of the ally party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, as its candidate.

Saiful Alam was initially nominated by BNP for the Dhaka-12 constituency. Later, the party gave the seat to Saiful Haque, general secretary of another alliance partner, the Revolutionary Workers Party. Subsequently, Saiful Alam submitted his nomination as an independent candidate.

Hasan Mamun, former president of Dhaka University’s Chhatra Dal branch, is from Patuakhali District. For the Patuakhali-3 constituency, which includes Golachipa and Dashmina, BNP gave the seat to Nurul Haque, president of another alliance partner, Gono Odhikar Parishad. Hasan Mamun, who has been preparing to contest in the national parliamentary election for a long time, also submitted his nomination as an independent candidate.

Rumeen Farhana, who was expelled as assistant international affairs of the BNP, has described the coincidence of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s death and her own expulsion on the same day as “significant”.

Despite her expulsion, she has expressed her determination to contest the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

She shared these remarks with Prothom Alo over the telephone on Tuesday night.

The BNP on Tuesday expelled Rumeen Farhana along with eight others for conducting organisational activities in defiance of party decisions.

This information was disclosed in a press release signed by the BNP’s senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The statement said that these leaders had been expelled from the party’s primary membership as well as from all positions at every level.

Reacting to her expulsion, Rumeen Farhana said that receiving the expulsion order on the very day of the death of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia marked a strange and painful chapter in her political life.

She said that being expelled on the day of the passing of the leader whose ideals she had followed and under whose guidance and affection she had advanced so far, could not be regarded as a mere coincidence.

She added that she had learned from Khaleda Zia herself the lesson of standing alone without compromise in politics.

Describing Khaleda Zia as an uncompromising leader, Rumeen Farhana said, “I have lost my political guardian, whose ideals I followed, who inspired me, and whose principles I adhered to meticulously in my political life—she has departed today, Tuesday. Her passing has caused an irreparable loss to the country and to the party. She was admitted to hospital on 23 November. Before that, on 20 November, she spoke to me. She asked why I had not been given a nomination. I will say only this much.”

The newly expelled BNP leader further said, “My decision to contest as an independent candidate is itself a form of uncompromising resistance, standing alone against the tide. This is something I learned from my leader. Standing alone without compromise, I learned this from her.”

Earlier, on Monday, Rumeen Farhana submitted her nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency (Sarail–Ashuganj and part of Bijoynagar).

She personally submitted the nomination papers to the upazila nirbahi officer and assistant returning officer of Sarail. After submitting her nomination, she told journalists, “Allah’s plans are beyond human understanding."

"In 1973, my father, language movement activist Oli Ahad, contested the election as an independent candidate against the tide of the Awami League," she added.

Rumeen Farhana also said, "Today, I am compelled to fight as an independent candidate against the tide of the Sheaf of Paddy.”

It may be noted that in the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, widely regarded as a stronghold of the Sheaf of Paddy symbol, the BNP-led alliance has nominated a leader of its alliance partner, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam, as the coalition candidate. He is contesting the election with the electoral symbol date palm.

Salahuddin warns against exploiting religion for votes

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that religion should neither be exploited for worldly gains, nor should people be misled with promises of heaven in exchange for votes.

“It is a major responsibility of Alem-Olama to take a clear stand against those who spread confusion in society by exploiting religion. Those who mislead people in the name of religion must be firmly resisted,” he said.

Salahuddin was speaking at a views-exchange meeting with local Islamic scholars (ulema) at Fasiakhali union in Chakaria upazila of the district on Saturday.

He said people are easily misled when someone speaks in the name of Islam while wearing religious attire.

“When opponents of Islam speak, people can identify them. But when religion itself is used to present wrong interpretations, the confusion becomes deeper. A certain group is doing this deliberately,” he said.

Salahuddin said talking about social welfare, economic prosperity or social dignity merely by invoking Islam, without any realistic plan, is essentially an attempt to use religion for personal or political gain.

He also urged all concerned to follow the electoral code of conduct.

Mufti Enamul Haque presided over the programme attended by imams, muezzins, khatibs and ulema.

Chakaria upazila BNP President Enamul Haque, General Secretary Mobarak Ali, Fasiakhali Union BNP President Kutubuddin, and local mosque imams and khatibs spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Salahuddin Ahmed visited Chakaria and paid homage at the grave of July Movement fighter and Chattogram Division’s first martyr Ahsan Habib.

He later laid the foundation stone for the construction of Chhararkul Madrasa Rahmania Hafezkhana and Orphanage at Fasiakhali.

Before that, he inaugurated a wooden bridge connecting Hajian Ali Para on the Matamuhuri River with Ward No. 9 of Chakaria Municipality from Ward No. 1 of Fasiakhali Union by cutting a ribbon.

Local farmers said that for a long time they had to transport their crops by boat or take long detours, resulting in great losses.

With the construction of the bridge, connectivity between Fasiakhali Ward No. 1 and Chakaria Municipality Ward No. 9 has been established, enabling farmers to sell their vegetables and crops at fair prices.

Locals described the bridge as a milestone in improving communication.

Earlier on Saturday morning, Salahuddin Ahmed inaugurated the former Guldi Pekua Model School and College at Sadar Union of Pekua upazila.

He said before establishing schools, proper surveys must be conducted to determine where schools are actually needed.

“A school does not only mean a big building; the most important thing is quality teachers,” he said, adding that even tin-shed or bamboo-made schools can provide good education if there are capable teachers.

Teachers of various educational institutions, members of school management committees, local administration officials and political leaders were present at the programme.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, former FBCCI President Mir Nasir Hossain said the discussion focused on problems faced by businesses and industries, keeping factories operational and protecting and expanding employment.

“We told him that any government, whoever comes, must restore business confidence if the country wants economic growth. Our success is linked with the government’s success,” he said, adding that Tarique listened attentively and noted their concerns.

Nasir Hossain said the body language of Tarique was positive and reassuring.
